History

Since its establishment in 1975, Life & Environment has been operating under the Planning and Building Act, under which it was assigned as the umbrella organization of the environmental movement with representation rights in the National Council for Planning and Construction. In 2002, following L&E’s initiative, the Knesset passed the Representation Act, representing environmental organizations in local and state planning and construction committees. L&E holds the legal mandate to represent the Environmental Movement by virtue of this law.

Starting 2017, since the appointment of acting Executive Director Mr. Eran Ben Yemini, the organization has reevaluated its role as the representing umbrella organization, and currently operates various projects in service of the environmental movement as a whole, with over 140 national and local member organizations.
